<image:caption>The future directions map took in where the traditional residential housing stock is in brown, spacious residential is in yellow. From there the community looked at what types of activities were happening throughout the neighborhood from urban homestead to green venture to figure out what do we do with over 600 acres of vacant land. This is a living document and as initiatives evolve in the neighborhood so to shall this map.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Restore the 'Moor - Restore the ’Moor</image:title>
<image:caption>Restore the ‘Moor is Brightmoor’s land use and quality of life planning process. Utilizing CDAD’s Strategic Framework and support staff Brightmoor Alliance was able to work with the community to create a land use and quality of life plan for Brightmoor. We see this as a living framework that will adapt as the neighborhood changes. The Brightmoor Wisdom Project is currently underway in May of 2021 to revisit the Restore the Moor. Through this process hundreds of residents were engaged and participated, giving countless feedback. To download the full report please click here. The highlights are below. The current conditions map shows neighborhood density, the dark brown is where the highest traditional residential is and yellow and dark green are the most spacious areas where there is not much current density. We then looked at what existing organizations we had that could do outreach to the community and broke the neighborhood down into 12 engagement zones.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Children's Mental Health - Children’s Mental Health</image:title>
<image:caption>If you have concerns for your child’s mood, behavior, and functioning… Speak with your child’s pediatrician and/or school social worker for possible referrals. Doctors and social workers will likely be well connected in the community and may know of clinicians who specialize in whatever issue your child is facing. Contact your insurance carrier, whether its Medicaid HMO or private insurance, to see who in your area is covered by your plan. Please note that the Medicaid HMO’s only cover 20 visits per year. This includes both appointments for psychiatric medication and psychotherapy, though they likely will be from different providers. They also do not cover services such as case management and home based services. If you feel that your child needs more intensive services (beyond 20 visits/year)… Contact Pioneer at 866-690-8257 to see if your child is eligible for Community Mental Health (CMH) services. As a parent, you can call them directly if your child is age 7 or above and not in foster care. If your child is age 6 or under, or in foster care, you should contact the CMH provider directly to schedule an intake assessment. Eligibility for services will be determined by the CMH provider, during that initial appointment. Pioneer will conduct a phone screening/assessment with you, the parent or guardian. It usually takes about 45 minutes. If the child is eligible, Pioneer will schedule them an intake appointment at their chosen CMH provider. At the intake appointment… When you and your child show up for the initial assessment, either at a CMH agency or a private practice, you will likely need to present proof of insurance, photo ID, and proof of guardianship/custody. This can be a birth certificate or a custody agreement, if you are divorced. You and/or your child will likely be asked to complete some paperwork prior to meeting with the clinician. Once all the paperwork is complete, the intake assessment will take place. Be prepared to answer questions about the child’s developmental history, physical health, school performance, specific behavioral/emotional symptoms, family history (including mental illness and substance abuse), history of trauma, substance abuse, etc. At the end of the interview, the clinician should be able to make recommendations for continued treatment, and to provide more information about additional services that your child qualifies for. Special thanks to Dr. Beth Rutkowski for pulling this info together.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A sixth-grader with poor attendance is 75% more likely to drop out of high school than other students. There is as much as a 50 percentage-point difference in the graduation rates of students who miss 0 to 5 days of school compared to those are absent 15 or more days. The Brightmoor Education Action Team (BEAT) is one of two offshoots of the Present! in Brightmoor Attendance Movement. The other is Every School Day Counts Detroit (ESDCD), a coalition of several organizations focused on getting rid of Chronic Absence. BEAT is a part of the 482forward coalition that focuses on building a network of activists fighting policy changes for schools that improve the equity and outcomes for children. Based upon a year-long listening campaign, BEAT has identified trauma as a significant barrier to children's educational attainment. Moreover, Adverse Childhood Experience Syndrome (ACES) and toxic stress were learned to be important ways that trauma contributes to the struggles fo our students and their parents. This TED talk by Dr. Nadine Burk Harris is a great introduction to this phenomenon. Currently BEAT meets normally once a month on the third Monday at 6pm at City Covenant Church; however due to the COVID-19 restrictions, meetings are being reworked. Still, please join us. You can indicate your interest by completing our interest form, and we will get your information to Ms. Dawn Wilson Clark, the team lead for BEAT.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wisdom Values (Copy) - Our Purpose</image:title>
<image:caption>We come together as contributors in building human wellbeing for all residents of Brightmoor. The Abundant Wisdom Teams will focus on wholeness because each aspect of the 4 essentials affects the others.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wisdom Values (Copy) - Values for this work with the community</image:title>
<image:caption>We respect residents as first and primary constituents; we acknowledge by word and practice that residents have demonstrated the strength and ability to survive. We come along side by invitation, we speak with respect, act in partnership, move with permission, represent with honesty, transparency and commitment that the wellbeing of the residents and the community are as important as any other priority and more important than most.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wisdom Values (Copy) - Values between each other</image:title>
<image:caption>Working in a sharing way together and being concerned about each other, talking with peace to each other, not being two faced or hiding things, meaning what we say and saying what mean, walking what we talk, delivering in a hurry but not messy, making sure we don’t lose sight of the things we have to do “in mean time” while we build a solid foundation for the future: Walk and chew gum at the same time kind of thing. We are open and flexible to wisdom provided both by hard numbers (empirical data) and the wisdom of life experience, letting both be in the recommendations we make.</image:caption>
